League Information:
Sheyenne Valley Horseshoe Club is an NHPA- and NDHPA-sanctioned League. We invite anyone of any age and playing level, from novice to veteran, to join us for some summer fun and new friendships. Those who wish to participate only as a substitute are also more than welcome. Our members are from Cooperstown, Hannaford, Pekin, and Binford.
We currently host a Mixed League, with the numbers of local pitchers ranging from 15 to 24 players, comprising from 5 to 8 teams. Teams are composed of 3 players each and are sponsored by local merchants.
Sheyenne Valley Horseshoe Club sponsors two sanctioned Invitational tournaments every summer, the Sheyenne Valley Open and the Dog Days of Summer, usually the third weekend in August; this year scheduled for August 18 & 19.
League members can also participate in tournaments around the state located at Bismarck, Minot, Fargo, and at Moorhead, MN.
NDHPA State Tournament is held annually during Labor Day weekend and rotates between Fargo and Bismarck; this year in Bismarck September 1 & 2.
NHPA sponsors the Annual World Tournament held at various locations around the country or Canada; this year scheduled for July 30 through August 11 in Knoxville, TN.
We are honored to have 4 current club members who have been inducted into the NDHPA Hall of Fame. Wally Rislov, Cooperstown, ND, was inducted in 1983. Doug Gronneberg, Hannaford, ND, was inducted in 1993. The late Marilyn and Paul Hagen, Cooperstown, ND, were inducted in 2006. The late, great Jake Jacobson was inducted as a charter Hall of Fame member in 1976. All of their pictures can be viewed at the Jamestown (ND) Civic Center where the ND Sports Hall of Fame is located.
The horseshoe courts are located on the south side of Cooperstown City Park. The 12 regulation courts are composed of local clay and were constructed in 1982, on the site of the old swimming pool. In fact, remnants of the old swimming pool can still be seen on both sides of the courts. Paul Hagen was the driving force in getting the courts established after having played for a few years in the Bald Hill League based in Hannaford.
The inaugural event was a tournament held in September of 1982 that included 10 Class A pitchers representing 60 state championships from North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota and one World Championship. Regular league play began the next year and included a Men's League, a Women's League, and a Mixed League. The league became sanctioned in 1987.
A shed was added to the west side of the park restrooms allowing storage space as well as providing the opportunity for the Club to sell concessions during its annual tournaments.
For those wishing to pitch some horseshoes for fun, horseshoes are available but you must call Miki at 701-797-7690 to gain access to them. Due to lack of repsonibility of others, the horseshoes have had to be kept away from public access. We ask that you do re-cover the courts and return the horseshoes after you are finished.
